San Diego, CA—The Fleet Science  Center has developed programs to captivate, engage and keep students curious while schooling from home. Students in grades K-8 will be engrossed as they explore science with hands-on activities using materials that are easy to find or likely to already have at home. Virtual lessons for an entire classroom, homeschool groups, individual student activities or curriculum support for teachers are now available online.

The Fleet Science Center believes science is in everything and education is the foundational starting point for discovery and curiosity. All of the virtual experiences created are designed to bring out the inner scientist in your students and facilitate learning both in and beyond classrooms.

“Overall, amazing experience! WOW! So impressed with the activities that came home and the supporting materials. Easy to follow and to get my son meaningfully engaged,” said parent of a virtual lesson attendee.

Entire classrooms can conduct a science exploration at the same time while distance learning with the many virtual lessons available for School Groups. Students are engrossed as they explore science with hands-on activities using materials that are easy to obtain or very likely to already have at home.

For individuals or small groups, the Fleet Science Center offers virtual science clubs where students can explore an array of fields including biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, physics, robotics and much more through hands-on activities.

“Thank you for offering virtual programs! And for including the materials pickup,” said another parent of a virtual class attendee. “It helps so much to have just the right materials and quantities to do the activities so that we don't have to do extra shopping or buy items in bulk.”

The Fleet’s online lessons for homeschool groups feature hands-on science activities and are designed to keep your students engaged. The online platform is a great way to continue the social connections established through homeschool groups. Options are available for single sessions and for series of five or eight classes.

“My homeschool 4th grader LOVES these ZOOM virtual classes! He enjoys Mrs. P and loves doing science experiments before class and during class,” said a parent of a virtual homeschool class attendee. “We would LOVE to continue these virtual ZOOM classes every day, all year long! The prepackaged materials and other lesson plans are a huge plus for parents. Thank you and we look forward to future virtual classes!”

Virtual lessons are 60-minutes long and will be led by a member of the Fleet’s education team. The STEM programs at the Fleet Science Center are popular with teachers and school systems across San Diego County, including the San Diego Unified School District.

The Fleet Science Center also offers workshops and resources to K-8 teachers and informal educators to enhance and support online learning. Participants get an interdisciplinary approach to science education and highlight the science in every school subject with the Like a Scientist workshops. Reading and science are integrated in an engaging way with Picture-Book Science workshops, where books are paired with inquiry-driven science investigations that can be easily replicated. Teacher Workshops are offered any day of the week, including school breaks.

Discount options are available for multiple workshops booked in one transaction. Contact education@rhfleet.org for more information.
