Fleet Science Center Announces Major Renovation as Part of Multi-Year Capital Campaign
San Diego, CA – The Fleet Science Center
The Fleet Science Center is launching the next transformative phase of its Science Starts Here Capital Campaign with a major renovation to its historic building in Balboa Park. The renovation project will break ground in September 2025 and is slated for completion in Spring 2026. Throughout the renovation, the Fleet will remain open, continuing to welcome guests with exhibitions, IMAX films, and public programs. This project reflects the Fleet’s continued investment in science learning, accessibility, and community engagement, while reaffirming its commitment to connect everyone in San Diego to the power of science.
As part of this transformation, the Fleet will increase public access exhibit space by 20% within the existing footprint and reconfigure the interior layout to enhance flow, create flexible program areas, and expand opportunities for hands-on exploration. Plans include restoring the building’s entrance to its original location, expanding and upgrading the family-friendly Craveology Café, adding a dedicated queuing and concessions area for the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater, and converting the current entrance rotunda into a multi-use gallery space. Additionally, the project introduces a new free-to-the-public entrance gallery and a lower-level gallery reconfiguration—two spaces that significantly extend the Fleet’s impact and reach.
The renovation follows the successful completion of the first phase of the Science Starts Here Capital Campaign: the modernization of the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. In November 2023, the Fleet retired its 70mm film projection system, the world’s first and longest-running IMAX® projector, and installed a state-of-the-art IMAX® Next Generation with Laser projection system, a new sound system, planetarium software, upgraded seating, and enhanced accessibility. This technology investment expanded the Fleet’s programming capabilities, enabling it to showcase the latest documentaries, Hollywood films, live performances, and immersive planetarium shows to audiences of all ages.
Guests will continue to enjoy the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater and a full calendar of unique events and educational offerings throughout construction. Updates on the renovation will be shared on the Fleet’s website and social channels, including behind-the-scenes access and opportunities to engage with the transformation as it unfolds.
The Science Starts Here Capital Campaign represents a $14.6 million investment in the future of the Fleet Science Center and the communities it serves. With over 400,000 annual visitors, this renovation is not only a physical transformation but a strategic leap forward—building on a 50-year legacy to ensure the Fleet continues to lead as a vital, innovative, and accessible science hub for generations to come.
