Renovation
The Fleet Science Center is set to break ground on an exciting project in September 2025, transforming the historic Balboa Park building. This renovation will improve visitor experience and expand space for programs and exhibitions by 20% within our existing footprint.
As the second phase of our Science Starts Here capital campaign and the first major renovation we have done since the late 90s, this project is an exciting milestone for the Fleet that will inspire hands-on science learning for generations to come.
Renovation upgrades:
- Craveology Café Expansion - A full-service kitchen, expanded menu, and dedicated ice cream stand (yes, you read that right!)
- New Community Gallery Entrance - A free-to-the-public entrance gallery connecting through the current theater lobby
- Enhanced Theater Experience - A dedicated queuing and concessions area for the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater
- Multi-Use Gallery Space - The current entrance rotunda will be transformed into a flexible, engaging exhibition space.
- Lower-Level Gallery Reconfiguration - Opening up even more opportunities for immersive experiences
What does this mean for you?
The Fleet will remain open throughout the renovation! You can continue to enjoy your favorites - like Kid City, Design Zone, and Studio X - as well as the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater, which will feature current films, classics, and an exciting new release this fall. We will also be unveiling a brand-new exhibition this October!
Renovation work will primarily happen outside of operating hours, but you may notice occasional noise or temporary wayfinding changes. Please refer to our resources below for more information and to plan your visit!

- What are the hours of operation?

Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Please check our Hours & Admission page for any exceptions or updates.
- What will be open and when?

The exhibit space will be fully available for the duration of the renovation. Craveology Café and the North Star Science Store are temporarily closed for expansion.
- Will food still be available?

Yes! We will have a new snack bar with drinks and treats. Craveology Café will be temporarily closed for expansion.
- Will you still show IMAX® documentaries and films?

Yes! While the path to the theater might look a little different, the film schedule will continue as usual.
- How long will the renovation last?

The renovation will begin in September and is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
