SAN DIEGO—July 25, 2023—As part of its 50th Anniversary celebration, the Fleet Science Center launches Community Mornings.

The Fleet offers Community Mornings as a way to think equitably and mitigate barriers to learning, engagement, and community-building.

These unique opportunities allow San Diego neighborhood residents to visit the Fleet, complimentary and as a community, on a specific Saturday morning, starting at 9 a.m., one hour before the Fleet opens to the public.

The inaugural Community Morning will be Saturday, July 29 for San Ysidro residents

And that’s not all: The Fleet will provide free round trip bus transportation from San Ysidro Middle School, 4345 Otay Mesa Road, to the Fleet. Four charter buses will depart at 8 a.m.

Community members also are welcome to provide their own transportation, but everyone must register to receive complimentary admission.

Saturday's event is already at capacity, with nearly 300 San Ysidro community members expected.

Community Mornings underscore the Fleet's commitment to connecting everyone in San Diego to the power of science. "Learning happens not just at school," says Yanet Lopez, Fleet Community Engagement Manager. "As we think of the joy of learning, we know that this type of family field trip, separate from school, can complement and enhance what goes on in traditional classrooms. This is so important as we fully return to normalcy in education. Families can learn together at Community Mornings."

On this special Saturday morning, San Ysidro community members can enjoy all the things that make the Fleet a fulfilling experience, plus a few exciting extras.

They can

  • Experience Fleet exhibit galleries with early access at 9 a.m., one hour before general admission. The Worst-Case Scenario: Survival Experience, the Fleet’s newest, very popular exhibit is included!
  • Get creative in our maker space, Studio X, with hands-on, minds-on science activities.
  • Engage at a photo booth and with social media contests.
  • Enter exciting opportunity drawings for membership and other prizes.
  • Enjoy a private screening of A Beautiful Planet documentary in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater

The Fleet will offer three more Community Mornings this year as it continues to celebrate 50 years of connecting everyone to the power of science.

The next Community Morning will be for National City on Saturday, August 26.
