San Diego, CA—The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center welcomes the 2015 centennial with the first of many concerts in our Rock in the Park live concert series!

Tim Flannery and the Lunatic Fringe will perform at the Fleet on Friday, January 16, at 7 p.m. The opening act for the show will be veteran San Diego musician Michael Tiernan.

Many people know Tim Flannery as the hard charging former San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants third base coach. He earned a reputation as a fierce and passionate competitor in his 34 years in professional baseball, as a player and as a coach.

Many people don’t know that Tim Flannery is also a world-class musician!

Last November, after helping to lead the San Francisco Giants to another World Series title, Tim Flannery announced his retirement from professional baseball, deciding instead to focus his attention on family and music.

"I will of course take this music love of mine to another level in hopes of raising money, awareness, for things dear to my heart," Flannery wrote on Facebook when he announced his retirement last November.

In January 2014, Flannery and his band, The Lunatic Fringe, concluded a series of four sold-out Northern California concerts benefiting Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan who suffered traumatic injuries and brain damage from being severely beaten outside Dodger Stadium on Opening Day 2011. Flannery was able to present the family of Bryan Stow with $96,000, which was all the revenue generated at the concerts from the purchases of Flannery's 11th album, "Outside Lands," released in November 2013.

In January 2015, Flannery plans to launch the Love Harder Project, dedicated to bringing attention and funds to people and organizations in need.

His music is some of the most gorgeous acoustic music to roll out of California since the halcyon days of the ‘70s folk explosion. He is a prolific and talented songwriter, having released eleven albums in 15 years. He is a seasoned fingerstyle legend of Americana music with a gift for crafting potent, resonant songs and delivering energetic, emotional live shows.

Flannery’s music enjoys radio support across the planet. He has been joined onstage by the likes of Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby, Garth Brooks and Jimmy Buffet. Flannery’s concerts ebb and flow with brilliant melodies, soaring harmonies and themes of love, travel and connecting with the Great Spirit. And of course, he sings about baseball.

Flannery’s latest record, “Outside Lands”, is a rich collection of stories amassed over the past two years, as fate released him and his teammates into the most fantastic journey of their collective lives. It is an extraordinary album that will only enhance his standing as a must-see performer.

The opening act for the show is Michael Tiernan. He has hung with monks deep in desert monasteries and lived in the Vatican, but he left the seminary for the higher calling of music, and has since racked up several national and international awards for his songwriting. His acoustic blend has a relaxed vibe mixed with a big city sound. Deep in meaning, yet playful in attitude, Michael’s music takes you from the temple to the tavern and from the beach to downtown.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Michael Tiernan performs at 7:30 p.m. Tim Flannery and the Lunatic Fringe perform at approximately 8:20 p.m.
