San Diego, CA—January 23, 2014— On Friday, February 21, an all-star lineup of San Diego's best musicians will take the stage in tribute to San Diego broadcast journalism icon Loren Nancarrow. The concert is the third in the Fleet’s first-ever “ROCK in the PARK” live concert series — inspired by the Fleet’s current exhibition, GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked the World — which kicked off on January 17 with a concert by Common Sense.

Eve Selis, Berkley Hart, Steph Johnson, Cathryn Beeks and Michael Tiernan will all perform to honor the late journalist who passed away in December 2013 from brain cancer. This special event also will feature a performance by Loren's son, Graham Nancarrow, and his band, Nancarrow. Donations will be accepted at the event to support the Loren Nancarrow Healing Garden Project at Scripps Radiation Therapy Center, part of Scripps Health (

The “ROCK in the PARK” concert series continues with live music on select Friday nights through March. Each show features food by The French Gourmet for purchase; beer, wine and cocktails available at the no-host bar; and the Fleet's 100+ hands-on exhibits open for exploration, including GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked the World. Doors open at 7PM for all shows. 21+ only; IDs will be checked at the door.

Friday, February 7: Paul Cannon with guest Michael Tiernan

He's homegrown, and he’s the real deal. Paul Cannon brings a cool, peaceful vibe that will have you grooving along with your friends like you’re at a bonfire on a San Diego beach. His song “Homegrown” was the most played song by any local artist in San Diego last year, and it was even chosen by the San Diego Padres as a theme song for the home team. Paul Cannon and his band deliver guitar-driven melodies and catchy lyrical hooks that will have you singing along.

Friday, February 21: A Special Tribute to Loren Nancarrow

Featuring performances by Eve Selis, Berkley Hart, Steph Johnson, Cathryn Beeks, Graham Nancarrow, Michael Tiernan and more artists to be announced.

Friday, March 7: Venice with guest Michael Tiernan

You can't leave a concert by Venice without saying WOW. In an age of “auto-tuned superstars,” these four vocalists blend perfect harmonies. There is no musical style beyond their range. How good are they? Ask Roger Waters of Pink Floyd—the guys just finished touring with him as his backing vocalists for The Wall Live tour. Venice will bring a hugely diverse playlist to Rock in the Park!

Friday, March 21: A Very Special Performer with guest Michael Tiernan

We’re dying to tell you who’s going to close out the ROCK in the PARK series, but we can’t announce his name just yet. Trust us … it’s worth the wait. You know him, you love him, he’ll rock you. Stay tuned. We’ll be able to share the secret in February.

Michael Tiernan opens each show. He hung with monks deep in desert monasteries and lived in the Vatican, but he left the seminary for the higher calling of music, and has since racked up several national and international awards for his songwriting. His acoustic blend has a relaxed vibe mixed with a big city sound. Deep in meaning, yet playful in attitude, Michael’s music takes you from the temple to the tavern and from the beach to downtown.

All performances will be held at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park (1875 El Prado). Ample FREE parking in the lot at Space Theater Way at Park Blvd. Doors open at 7PM; Michael Tiernan performs at 7:30PM; headliners perform at approximately 8:20PM.

Tickets are $25 general admission, in advance; $22 for Fleet members, staff and volunteers; $30 at the door. Space is limited. Tickets are on sale now online through Eventbrite at; in person at the Fleet ticket counter, open at 10AM daily; or by phone by calling the Fleet’s Client Services Department at (619) 238-1233 x 806.
