SAN DIEGO—Prepare for an extraordinary adventure as the Fleet Science Center brings you Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa starting June 17 in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. This captivating film invites visitors to embark on a wild exploration of the iconic and diverse animal life that thrives in the Serengeti.

The Serengeti is home to one of nature's most breathtaking spectacles, the annual wildebeest migration, which unfolds on an unparalleled scale. With more than a million wildebeests migrating with the flourishing short grass plains that rely on the rainy seasons for growth, this extraordinary journey has a profound impact on numerous animal species, including elephants, lions, cheetahs, pink flamingos, hippos and crocodiles.

Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa delves into the essential roles various animals play in navigating life within the Serengeti. Audiences will witness the significant impact of elephants on tree removal and river deepening, the crucial role of lions in regulating the grazing population, and the important contribution of vultures at the end of an animal's life. The film also provides insights into the learning experiences of young animals, from lion cubs honing their hunting skills to wildebeest calves taking their first steps in this extraordinary ecosystem.

The filmmakers behind Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa seized a unique opportunity during the global lockdowns to capture the Serengeti in an uninhabited state, rarely witnessed since the 1970s or 1980s. The untouched landscape allowed them to obtain remarkable footage of wildlife and awe-inspiring vistas, providing viewers with perspectives that are rarely seen.

"Filming in an untouched Serengeti allowed us to capture wildlife and breathtaking vistas from perspectives that few have ever seen," shares filmmaker Michael Dalton, whose extensive knowledge of the ecosystem informed the project.

From sweeping aerial views of the Great Migration, where the vast plains come alive with countless animals, to mesmerizing scenes of a lion's breath floating in the moonlight, Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa offers an exhilarating and timeless glimpse into a wilderness that will leave audiences in awe.

"Our mission was to transport the audience into the heart of the Serengeti, immersing them within the herds and making them feel like an integral part of the landscape," explains producer David Gross. "Presenting this film in a state-of-the-art giant screen theater offers the closest experience to actually being there."
Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa is produced by Definition Films and distributed by K2 Studios. This film is locally sponsored in part by the City of San Diego.

Beginning June 17, Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa will screen daily at the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. General Admission tickets grant access to the Fleet's exhibit galleries and the choice of one documentary film, offering a complete and immersive experience for visitors to enjoy.
