Celebrate the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s 40th Anniversary Year!

San Diego, CA—April 15, 2013—Take the cameras out of their bags and soar along Balboa Park and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center on a journey to find the best butterfly photo around town in the Flight of the Butterflies Photo Contest! San Diego residents are encouraged to submit their best photos of butterflies within Balboa Park and the greater San Diego region. This contest flies its course now through Sunday, May 5; with public voting for the best shot on Monday and Tuesday, May 7 and 8. So even if you can’t catch their beauty in a lensfinder, you can help us select the best images! Please log on to vote for your favorite shot at http://www.balboapark.org/butterfly-contest; winners will be posted on May 9!

To set flight, participants can upload their photos on Balboa Park’s Web page starting April 10th and no later than May 5th. Photos containing identifiable persons are deemed ineligible. Entrants may use Photoshop, Instagram, and other tools to modify their digital images. Participants under the age of 18 are also welcome to join!

Flight of the Butterflies is the awe-inspiring story of two unlikely heroes that share a common strength, following the epic journey of the monarch and the equally epic quest of determined scientist Dr. Fred Urquhart, who spent 40 years trying to discover the mysteries surrounding their journey and secret winter hideaway. The iconic monarch butterfly is a true marvel of nature. Weighing less than a penny, it makes one of the longest migrations on Earth across a continent, with pinpoint navigational accuracy, to a place it has never been.
