Jean-Michel Cousteau's Secret Ocean. Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of ocean pioneer Jacques Cousteau, brings to the Giant IMAX Dome screen a stunning look at a secret world within the ocean. Dive in and discover the beauty and diversity of the oceans--the source of all life on our planet. Filmed in the Bahamas, Fiji and Bimini, Jean-Michel Cousteau's Secret Ocean will introduce you to more than 30 sea species, illuminating behaviors captured for the first time thanks to new underwater filming tools. Narrated by renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle. Recommended for general audiences. Journey To Space. Through visually stunning imagery, and in collaboration with leading space experts, Journey To Space showcases the exciting plans NASA and the space community are working on to take humans further into space than ever before. The film calls attention to the reality that the space program did not die with the end of the Shuttle Program in 2011. It is vibrantly alive. Journey To Space will both inspire a new generation to dream of a future in space and engender a new appreciation for the accomplishments of the Space Shuttle Program. The film provides a timely review of how NASA has been transitioning from the end of the Space Shuttle Era to a much more ambitious future that will forever change how we live and operate in space as a species. The Sky Tonight: Year of the Dwarf Planet
NASA spacecrafts have visited two dwarf planets so far this year, Ceres and Pluto. What is a dwarf planet? What have we learned from these space missions? Should Pluto be considered a planet again? Join us and learn the latest from the Dawn and New Horizons missions! The Fleet's popular monthly live planetarium show of the San Diego sky reaches a new level of stunning full-color visuals and incredibly realistic simulations of cosmic phenomena with our state-of-the-art digital projection system. A professional astronomer leads backyard stargazers through the universe.San Diego County Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors on the Prado in Balboa Park, weather and operational requirements permitting. The Impossible Science Experience
The magic is back in San Diego! The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center welcomes Jason Latimer, the World Champion of Magic and judge on Syfy's Wizard Wars, to the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater for a special limited-engagement performance of a one-of-a-kind show. The Impossible Science Experience combines magic and science to create effects that no one thought could ever exist, such as light being bent, water being shaped and a person walking through a solid object right before your eyes! The Impossible Science Experience combines Jason's jaw-dropping illusions with physics, psychology, chemistry, mathematics and technology to create an enlightening and entertaining family-friendly show. In addition to Jason's impressive credentials in the world of magic, the Fleet has also appointed him the science center's Curator of Impossible Science. (45 min.) Saturday and Sunday at 3:30PM and 4:30PM. (Please note: No shows on 8/1, 8/22 and 8/23)

IMAX® Films & Planetarium Shows in the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center's Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Giant Dome Theater.

The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is home to Southern California's only Giant Dome Theater, which reopened in 2012 after extensive renovations as the Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. Our theater is extraordinary in many ways.

*  It is the world's first IMAX Dome Theater.
*  It features the world's first NanoSeamTM Dome screen in an IMAX theater.
*  It offers two unique experiences in one space: IMAX films and planetarium shows.

The Heikoff Giant Dome Theater boasts a 76-foot tilted Dome screen and a 16,000-watt digital surround sound system, providing a stunning visual and audio experience.

What Is a Dome Theater?

Our Giant Dome Theater has a gigantic, curved screen that wraps the entire theater. This hemispherical screen offers an immersive viewing experience, enhancing the feeling of motion and giving you the sensation that you're in the show.

What Is IMAX?

IMAX is the world's largest film format, yielding incredible clarity and spectacular images. IMAX films are projected by special projectors that weigh as much as a small car and enable the incredible film images to be projected with brightness and clarity on the huge Dome screen.

What Are Planetarium Shows?

The Heikoff Giant Dome Theater boasts a state-of-the-art digital SkyScan projection system. The Fleet uses this system to project planetarium shows that allow audiences to journey to the outer reaches of space from the comfort of their theater seats. We show pre-produced planetarium programs (some of which are created by our own stellar in-house team!) as well as The Sky Tonight, which is a monthly live, astronomer-led planetarium show.

Captioning

The Fleet offers two options for hearing-impaired guests: closed-captions and assistive listening devices.

Our closed-captioning system is an enhancement of the Rear Window system. When you purchase your ticket, tell the guest services associate that you would like to use the closed-caption service. The service is complimentary, and it is accessible in the upper-right seating area of the theater.

Assistive listening devices increase the intelligibility of theater presentations by enhancing the narration and dialogue and lowering music and sound effects. Ask for a complimentary headset at the Ticket Counter.

What's Showing?
