Thousands of attendees lined the streets, all eager to step inside the grand convention hall. Billboards showcasing the latest films captivated everyone's attention. As a BEWiSE blogger reporting for the Fleet Science Center, I was excited to embark on an adventure into the vibrant realm of Comic-Con in San Diego. Buckle up as I take you on the Comic-Con journey; it's going to be an exhilarating ride!

Comic-Con revolves around two main attractions: the bustling exhibit hall and the enlightening panels. Entering the exhibit hall felt like stepping into a treasure trove. Our senses were overwhelmed by a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds. Vendors beckoned with rows of merchandise, their voices blending into a joyous cacophony, while the savory aroma of food trucks wafted through the air, teasing our appetites. Every corner held the promise of discovery, enticing us to explore further.

The panels offered a different kind of thrill. One of our standout moments was the panel, The Evolution of AI Through Film and Reality, which was a discussion about the similarities and differences in how AI is represented in movies versus real life. Fictional stories can often exaggerate ideas such as AI, but these educated individuals explained the truth about this topic, answering questions like "Can AI take over the world?" The room buzzed with anticipation as the panelists took the stage, and we quickly realized this wasn't just another tech talk.

Panelists illustrated how films like Big Hero 6 and WALL-E delve into the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. In Big Hero 6, Baymax, a compassionate robot designed for healing, becomes a pawn in the hands of a power-hungry CEO. The stark contrast between Baymax's good intentions and the destructive potential of its misuse made us ponder a crucial question: Is technology itself dangerous, or is the user? Similarly, WALL-E painted a chilling picture of a future where humanity has become utterly reliant on technology, losing the ability to think and act independently. Yet, amidst this dependency, one character's awakening highlighted the transformative power of understanding and responsibly using technology.

The panelists left us with a memorable quote: "AI isn't dangerous, ignorance about AI is." This resonated deeply, underscoring the importance of education and open discussions about technology. It felt like we were stepping into a larger conversation about the future, making the panel an invaluable part of the Comic-Con experience. The laughter that filled the room and the energy of shared knowledge were palpable. We had the chance to meet influential figures and gain insights from their experiences. The thrill of asking questions and receiving real-time feedback added an interactive element that made the event feel personal.

However, not every panel was a home run. In one instance, we found ourselves sitting through a session that didn't quite meet our expectations. It was a reminder that engaging content is essential, and choosing wisely is key to avoiding a lackluster experience.

As we wandered deeper into the exhibit hall, we encountered countless vendors, artists, and authors, each offering a piece of their universe. The atmosphere was electric, with passionate fans animatedly discussing their favorite shows and characters. Every stall held the potential for discovery, from unique artwork to merchandise that felt like a personal treasure. The artists' passion was infectious, and we connected over shared interests, finding community amidst the chaos. Meanwhile, larger brands like Disney and Nickelodeon brought a sense of familiarity, drawing in crowds with their iconic characters and nostalgia.

However, navigating through the throngs of people proved to be a challenge. At times, we felt like we were part of a living tapestry, moving in rhythm with the crowd. It was exhilarating yet overwhelming. Prices for some items left us gasping, as vendors took advantage of the Comic-Con frenzy. Still, the thrill of finding that perfect collectible made it all worthwhile.

One of the most delightful aspects of Comic-Con was the stunning array of cosplay. As we walked through the halls, we encountered fans dressed as an eclectic mix of characters, each costume showcasing incredible creativity. From intricately designed armor to whimsical outfits, it felt like we had stepped into a vibrant tapestry of fandom; some had clearly spent weeks crafting their looks, pouring their hearts into every stitch and detail. We couldn't help but admire the artistry and passion that went into each costume.

Comic-Con is a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with engaging panels, exclusive merchandise, and stunning artwork. The atmosphere crackles with energy, and the camaraderie among fans is obvious. Yet, it's vital to consider your own preferences before splurging on tickets. If the thought of large crows and lengthy panels makes you uneasy, this may not be the event for you. But if you can embrace the hustle and bustle, Comic-Con promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of pop culture. The excitement, the connections, and the sheer joy of being surrounded by fellow fans make it a unique experience. So, are you ready to join the adventure? Grab your tickets for next year, and we'll see you there!

This year, the Fleet Science Center sent four young women in the BEWiSE program to San Diego Comic-Con to report on the event and the Fleet's panels. This post was written by a team of these reporters and reflects their experience at one of the world's largest pop-culture and science fiction celebrations of the year.
