Volunteering: It’s in Your DNA!

Volunteer at the Fleet and help connect people of all ages to the possibilities and power of science. The Fleet offers many ways to get involved. You can choose to volunteer with our exhibitions, in Studio X, in our North Star Science Store or in a variety of other programs and departments. Every volunteer is an invaluable part of the Fleet family, helping us engage the entire San Diego community in the wonder of science.

Requirements

  • 15 years or older 
  • Background check for volunteers over 18 
  • Orientation before first volunteer shift 
  • Minimum of two shifts per month

How to Apply

Step 1: Application 

Click on the position that interests you and fill out our online application.

  • If you are under 18, you will be asked to submit two letters of reference at orientation via email
  • If you are 18 or older, you will be asked to submit a background check, all expenses covered by the Fleet 

Step 2: Orientation 

Check out the Fleet, learn about different volunteer roles, and meet Fleet staff!  

  • Learn how to get started in your new volunteer role

Step 3: Background Check 

We complete a thorough background check on all employees, volunteers, and interns who are 18 years or older. 

  • This check includes county, state and federal criminal records and databases, as well as sexual offender registries
  • You must have a satisfactory record with no history of violent or sexual crimes or theft

Step 4: Training  

Each position has specific requirements for completing training.  

  • Your first shift will be with a staff or volunteer mentor
  • We ask that volunteers complete this first shift within 30 days (one month)

Step 5: Volunteer! 

Have you completed all the above steps?  Now you are ready to start volunteering! Let your supervisor know what days and shifts work for you to have a weekly set schedule, or set your own schedule as you go.
