Southern right whale breach rainbow. A southern right whale, whalers gave these whales their name, as they were the right whales to hunt. This population of 35,000 was so reduced by this industry that only 35 females remained.

Gentoo penguins on iceberg. Gentoo penguins gather on an iceberg before heading out to sea to feed.
Below the ice sea anemones. Below the sea ice the water is a constant -2°C (about 28°F). The high concentration of salt in the water stops it from freezing, but in the cold creatures like these sea anemones grow very slowly and to an old age.
