Explore Aerodynamics and Flight Technology in Our Newest Exhibition: ON THE FLY: Technology Takes Off, Making its World Premiere on FRIDAY, AUGUST 2!

Please Join the Jet Set for a VIP Media Takeoff Party on Thursday, August 1, from 6PM-7:30PM.

Meet New Fleet Executive Director Steve Snyder!

Catch the Quadricopter Demo, Test Your Aerodynamics, Schmooze, Sip and Sample!

What:

On the Fly features multiple daily performances by small-scale unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), complemented by interactive stations where visitors can create flying objects of their own and then test them out using wind tubes or a motorized airplane launcher. A digital media kiosk highlights current events involving unmanned flight technology and its uses.

The UAVs take flight in a temporary arena in the Main Gallery—hovering, moving, reassembling and reshaping the space. The entire performance is controlled by a laptop. This fascinating display highlights the unique characteristics of the UAVs and how they fly, using magnetometers, pressure sensors, ultrasound sensors, gyroscopes rotors and motors.

After enjoying the show, you can apply the principles of aerodynamics to create your own aircraft in On the Fly. The Fleet provides all the supplies, and you provide your creativity in crafting a flying object. See how well your creation takes flight by testing it out in a wind tube or sending it into the sky with the motorized airplane launcher.

Hurry into the Fleet, and enjoy this exhibition before it takes off at the end of the year!

In Conjunction with Our New Exhibit: On the Fly: Technology Takes Off, We Present A Special Ethics Lecture––Drones and Other UAVs: Benefits and Risks––Featuring a Guest Panel of Experts in the Field As We Examine UAV Technology and the Myriad Uses It Is being Applied To Across the World!

What:

New technologies can raise challenging ethical dilemmas, and drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are no exception. These aircraft may be autonomously operated by onboard computers or directed remotely by a human operator. UAVs are used for many purposes, ranging from crop dusting farmland to military operations. Join our UAV experts as we explore the benefits, perceived concerns, real risks, and public safety. What is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and how might UAVs be used in the future? Join our UAV experts as we take a closer look at UAVs in public safety and other areas. We will explore the myriad applications for this innovative technology, their uses and ensuing repercussions.

Our guest panel will include Lucien Miller, CEO of Innov8tive Designs; Keith McLellan, CEO of ROV Systems LLC, Arizona; and Commander (Ret.) Bob Osborne, who served 38 years with the LA County Sheriff’s Department; moderated by Larry Hinman, USD Professor of Philosophy.

In conjunction with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Fleet welcomes guests to encounter science from an ethical viewpoint; brings together community leaders of various backgrounds to examine current scientific issues from diverse perspectives; and invites the public to explore with them how science can best serve society.

We will draw and build models to see what structures, processes and principles emerge and how they might be applied to human pursuits. Starting in August you can investigate the mechanics of air movement, and learn how wind power contributes to the production of energy and the advancement of new technologies. The last Saturday of each month, Challenge Saturday, culminates in two visitor contests: for Bio-Inspiration, for the best design of an object illustrating a working concept, and the best essay for application of a bio-inspired process; and for Wind Power: to create amazing vehicles for a wind powered race, and to write essays on the creative new uses of wind power for the future.
