Learning Exchange

In September 2020, UC San Diego was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to fund the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). As a highly interdisciplinary research area, MRSEC will focus on two important, emerging approaches to build new materials aimed at improving human lives.

The first research theme is geared toward developing new ways to control the properties of materials during their synthesis by controlling how they transition, from the smallest atomic building blocks to materials that are large enough to see with the human eye.

The second research theme is focused on creating hybrid materials that incorporate living substances—microbes and plant cells—in order to create materials with new properties.

How is MRSEC working together with the Fleet Science Center?

In an effort to intentionally reach the public, the UC San Diego MRSEC team will work with the Fleet Science Center to connect the community to the work that will be happening at MRSEC. Teacher-Scientist Roundtable is one way that the UC San Diego MRSEC team will work with the Fleet Science Center to connect teachers to explore Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the expertise of MRSEC scientists.

Additionally, the Fleet will also engage in community listening to help inform the design of MRSEC educational programs that can reach the public.

Who should attend?

We welcome and encourage  K-12 teachers who will be leading science inquiry within their classrooms in the upcoming academic year to attend.

Teacher-Scientist Roundtable is a one-day professional development experience for teachers in the San Diego area. Participating teachers will have a chance to interact with MRSEC scientists in small groups.

Teacher Kits

Teachers who register will be provided with a Teacher Kit to utilize and follow along during the course of the Teacher Roundtable.

Stipend Information and Payment

Teachers who register and successfully complete the criteria are eligible for a $150 stipend for their participation.

Eligible participants will receive payment of stipend upon completion and submission of all required criteria. The Fleet Science Center will be responsible for the distribution of the stipend payments via mail.
