BE WiSE engages young women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning experiences in collaboration with the region's research, industry and academic institutions. BE WiSE goals are to:

Stimulate young women's interest in STEM through interactions with professionals Increase participants' opportunities and knowledge of STEM fields of study Develop a community of young women (grades 7–12) engaged in science learning through out-of-school activities Sustain interest and involvement through alumnae and ongoing participation for women in science at all levels

BE WiSE invites girls in grades 7 and 8 to Science Overnights to explore their interest in science, hosts events for BE WiSE members in high school to encourage their selection of more courses in science and math, and exposes these girls to adult women scientists who share their knowledge and passion and experiences with science and engineering careers.  Learn more about the annual activities for BE WiSE.

BE WiSE selects girls from all across San Diego County and has sustained contact with over five hundred girls over the past 14 years. The first BE WiSE alumnae entered college in June 2003.

Girls must apply for BE WiSE in grades 7 and 8.  The application period is January–February of each year.  Girls must submit an application with a teacher recommendation and an essay to be considered for the program.  Once accepted, they will attend a science overnight as their first activity then will continue to be invited to various science workshops throughout high school and into college.  Learn more about the application process.
